This Truesight scenario seems much the same and I would rule that if a creature can see through magical illusions and darkness, they can certainly see through a bit of fog.Īs a (mostly forever) DM, I HATE players who keep saying things like 'busted', 'OP', 'broken', 'cheesed', and the like. With that in mind, my table and I agreed that reaction scrolls can be used so long as they are readily accessible. It's absolutely insane to imagine a scenario where an attack is about to hit and a player has enough time to dig through their bag, find the right scroll, open it, read the incantation, and cast the spell before the attack hits. I'm not saying to go against what he says but to consider if the ruling makes sense at your table.įor example, JC ruled that spell scrolls that use a reaction (like Shield) can be used the same as the spell itself. Hell, there's a whole reddit post from last year about his worst calls and boy is it a fun little read. His calls are almost always RAW and almost never RAI because Wizards doesn't want to keep issuing errata every time a scenario comes up that wasn't explicitly addressed in the rules, which happens often as 5E is intended to be accessible and rules-light. I know he's the lead rules overlord or whatever but people should take his rulings with a grain of salt. Come up with a reason so that players can work with it it makes the game so much more fun! If it's just pure magic, maybe they find an anti-magic field. If I say it's due to powerful thermal receptors like a pit viper, then a glass window or some anti- Predator mud baths blocks would let the players engage that way. If I say a dragon's blindsight happens when something enters its aura, the players can bargain with a hag for a Potion of Protection From Aura. On the other hand, there's nothing stopping DMs from being creative.

Maybe some lore from a different edition will tell you how dragons' blindsight works, but a massive number of DMs never played another edition so that's not so helpful. Or hell, maybe they can hear a temperature even my weak human ears can tell hot poured water from cold poured water, and maybe air expanding or contracting due to temperature changes makes some kinda tiny noise.īut the RAW doesn't breakdown or qualify blindsight that way (except via the echolocation feature in the Bat entry), and real life examples are limited to bats and cetaceans. IRL, bat sonar is incredibly precise a bat could definitely tell a red from a white based on horn difference. In bats, it's sonar images from echolocation. Logically, it would depend on what the blindsight represents. that comes as a qualifier with most spells. Should Vecna have Blindsight in addition to Truesight? I think that's up to the DM, but it would certainly greatly strengthen a magic-based character by removing the ability to effectively stop them through the only tried-and-true counter to them: making them unable to choose 'a creature you can see' or 'a point you can see', etc. Blindsight effectively (depending on your personal ruling of Conditions) makes you immune to the effects of Blinded and Obscuring. So RAW, Heavily Obscured stops it.Ĭompare that to Blindsight, which specifically means you can 'see' without needing to be able to 'see'. You can't see through solid obstruction like walls, and you can't use Truesight if you have the blinded condition. It is still limited by the standard 'sight' rules. Truesight sees through magic and makes sure you can't be fooled by visual tricks.

Truesight isn't just "the Best Vision", each sight-type has its own uses, weaknesses, and use-cases. It's 100% RAI, because the vision type you're looking for is Blindsight, not Truesight.
